You have to clean the living environment so that the life cycle of the fleas is broken, and they will not immediately return once the fleas on your pet have been eradicated.  Fleas do not develop and grow on your pet, the eggs that the adults lay fall off your pet and onto the ground, where they hatch, feed off organic material and go through all the stages of their development up to adult flea, and only then do they jump onto a host animal. If you do not clean the whole environment properly, therefore, you will continue to have problems with fleas.
