Once your puppy has fleas, it is vital to act fast with puppy flea treatment. And there is actually only one form of treatment that is appropriate for puppies, the bath with a detergent. Any chemical solutions should be strictly ruled out, whatever the product might say about being suitable for puppies. Using chemicals on your pet is always a risk but puppies are even more vulnerable, with the possibility that their use will lead to a serious illness or even result in death. On the other hand, the treatment must be applied as soon as possible after the infestation is found as prolonged exposure to fleas could lead to the transference of a disease, or result in the puppy becoming allergic, making the reaction even more severe.
Do not panic, however, if you do find that your puppy has fleas. As long as you have caught it early, just carrying out the puppy flea treatment will clear the problem up. Remember that it is a very common occurrence for puppies to get fleas though, so watch out for it.
The prime spot to give a puppy a flea bath, as with a kitten, is in the kitchen sink. This is because it is at a good height to be able to see what is going on, and you can more easily control the puppy, who might not like the water. The steep walls of most kitchen sinks means that it will be more difficult for the puppy to escape even if it does manage to wriggle free.
You start by wetting the puppy, so put him in some warm water, not too hot and not too cold, up to his neck. Get his head wet too but be careful around his eyes and mouth. Once you have rinsed the puppy, take him out again and add the detergent; washing up liquid is fine for this, you just need something to make a lather, and it doesn’t harm the puppy at all. Once you have rubbed the detergent into the fur so that it has got down to the skin, and you have done this all over the body, again being careful around sensitive areas, put the puppy back in the sink and rinse the detergent off. At this point, the puppy flea treatment is done and your puppy should be free of fleas!
If you have already treated your house, garden (see the sections on how to treat your house and garden for fleas) and other pets properly, then this puppy flea treatment should be the end of your flea problem! And if you maintain these standards of cleanliness, then with a little bit of luck it will be the last time you have to deal with fleas at all. Good luck!
