Kitten Flea Treatment

Kitten Flea TreatmentKitten flea treatment is a tricky business. Kittens are obviously very delicate, they are still growing, so using chemical products on them to get rid of fleas is very dangerous.  Even if the product says it is suitable for kittens, especially if they are under six weeks old, you are risking an adverse reaction, which could lead to a very serious illness or even death.  Unfortunately the only other alternative is a flea bath, and as cats don’t like to get wet this will likely prove very difficult.

What you certainly don’t want, however, is to have to carry out the kitten flea treatment twice,  so be sure that you have thoroughly treated the living environment, and the kitten’s parents, so that the fleas will not return once you have killed them in the bath.
The optimal place to perform a flea bath for a kitten is in the kitchen sink.  From there you will be at a good height to see what is going on and be able to control the kitten.  It will be trying to escape, so be careful.  In fact, if at all possible it would be best for two people to carry out this work so that the kitten can be kept steady while the treatment is applied.

The water you use should be warm, or mild, not cold.  The kitten is going to hate the experience enough without the water being cold.  Water on its own will not be enough to get rid of the fleas, however, you will also need to use detergent.  There is no need to buy any special products for this as it has been found that dish detergent works very well at killing fleas, and does not harm the kitten.

To begin the kitten flea treatment just bring the water level to a height so that the kitten can be submerged up to their neck.  You want the whole body under water, but obviously not the head as well.  To clean the face, a face washer should be used, and be careful not to get too close to sensitive areas like the eyes.  You will then be able to get rid of a lot of the fleas simply by rinsing the kitten all over their body, gently massaging the fleas out of their fur.

Now that your kitten is wet all over their body, you can take them out of the sink in order to apply the detergent.  (Remember to tell them that it’s not quite over yet!).  Again, massage the detergent into their fur so that it gets down to the skin where the fleas are.  Do this all over their body so that no fleas will be left behind.

To complete the kitten flea treatment you have to put the kitten back in the sink and rinse off the detergent.  After you have done this, all the fleas should be dead, and if you have done all the necessary work with the house, garden and other pets already, then that should be the end of your flea problem (this time at least!).

These steps sound very easy, very much like washing a saucepan, but as everybody knows, kittens are not as well behaved as saucepans.  Then again, saucepans aren’t as much fun to play with so it’s not a bad deal!
