Perhaps this goes without saying, but holistic flea treatment is more aimed at the pet in general, not at the fleas specifically. It is based on the theory that a healthy pet (or person, for that matter) is less likely to get sick. It might seem as if health is just the condition that you find yourself in prior to sickness, and to an extent of course this is true, however that is just the health which defines sickness by being opposite to it. True Health is something a little different. If a person eats nothing but fast food, hardly ever washes and lives in a filthy environment, they might be free of certain diseases and troubles at the moment, but their chances of getting in to trouble are increased and is it really right to say that they are Healthy?
The same goes for your pet as regards fleas. A pet which is given the proper food, and lives under pleasant circumstances, gets plenty of exercise and lives in a clean environment, is less likely to contract fleas. That, perhaps, is obvious, but this is what holistic flea treatment is based on. This does not do much good once your pet actually has fleas, however, although it is a good time to get these things in order as it will help to increase the effectiveness of whichever treatment you choose to fight the fleas, and helps to prevent the fleas coming back once they have been got rid.
What constitutes a good diet, good living conditions and environment is too complicated an issue to enter into in depth, however there are plenty of good books and websites available on the subject. It is also a good idea to talk to an animal health professional about the issue; they may be able to give you specific advice for your pet regarding good holistic flea treatment.
Remember, however, that aggressive treatment for fleas may cause as much damage to your pet as the fleas themselves. Chemical solutions always carry their risks of harming your pet and anyone who comes in to contact with your pet before the chemicals have been removed. There are, however, non-chemical means for treating your pets for flea, and this also comes under holistic flea treatment. It might sound simple, but a flea comb is actually a good option in this regard, which will at least get rid of a lot of the adult fleas. It does take some time and effort however, combing your pet every day for about a month will probably be necessary before results are likely to be seen. Once you have fleas on your comb, dunk them into soapy water in order to drown them.
Also, a bath will work with any soapy stuff that lathers; it will drown the fleas if left for about five minutes, although this cannot be done too often as it will dry out the pet’s skin. For dogs, adding essential oils can deter the next wave of fleas from latching on again, but this is not recommended for cats as it could be harmful.
Another way of deterring the fleas is by feeding your pet yeast or garlic. This has the double effect of providing extra vitamin B, as well as making your pet less tasty to the fleas! They are blood sucking parasites, after all, a little like tiny vampires! There are also herbal sprays and several other holistic flea treatments that need to be more fully looked into.
Overall, however, although holistic flea treatment is the most time consuming and requires the most effort, in the end it will not only get rid of fleas but make for a healthier, happier pet who will probably live a lot longer.
