Frontline Flea Treatment

Frontline Flea TreatmentFrontline flea treatment works by introducing an ingredient called fiprinol into the oil glands of your pet, located just under the skin.  This means that as more oil is secreted by the glands, fiprinol is also excreted onto your pet’s fur, affecting the fleas all over its body within a day after application.  It will then work for several weeks, acting to kill fleas and disrupt the life cycle by affecting the eggs and larvae as well.

There are different Frontline flea treatments made for cats and dogs, and it comes in three different types: Frontline Plus, Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Spray.  Frontline Spray must be used all over, and it is a good idea to wear latex gloves while applying it as you should be ruffling the fur of your pet as you spray so that it gets down to the skin.  Do not spray around the eyes, mouth or other sensitive areas, however, and instead get some of the formula on a gloved hand, then proceed to gently rub the solution into your pet’s fur.

Frontline Top Spot does not need to be applied all over you pet, but rather in the “top spot,” between the shoulder blades at the base of the skull, which is usually the part which is most affected by fleas.  It is one of the only places where dogs and cats cannot get to to lick.  Frontline Plus works in the same way, but is more powerful because it also contains methoprene which is very effective at disrupting the life cycle of the fleas, thereby making it a more permanent solution.

Whichever form of Frontline flea treatment you use, however, you should also thoroughly clean the living area of your pet so that you destroy the eggs, larvae and pupae of the fleas, preventing another outbreak of fleas on your pet.  For more information on how to do this, check out the “flea treatment for your garden” and “flea treatment for you house” sections of this website.
