Cat Flea Treatment

Cat Flea TreatmentThere are plenty of cat flea treatments out there, and as with everything some are good, some are bad and some are okay.  Obviously you are going to want to get the good ones, but remember that this is only a guide, and it depends on what has been reported about the treatments most of the time.  We are dealing with living creatures here so it is not a simple equation, there might be any number of reasons why your cat will not respond in the same way.  However, to hopefully set you on the right track, here are some of the products available, the ones to try first and the ones from which you should steer clear.

Two of the best cat flea treatments are Frontline Plus and Advantage.  Frontline Plus is a strong treatment, so is very good to use when your cat has a large infestation of fleas (the optimal time to use chemical products at all) and does not, compared to other formulas, contain a lot of chemicals.  This is probably the leading cat flea treatment, and if you get this it is very possible you won’t need to buy any more.  Another good product, though, is Advantage.  The main benefit of Advantage is how fast acting it is – it says that it will get rid of the fleas on your cat within 12 hours, and this seems to be an accurate statement according to reports.  Of course you will have had to make sure that you also treat your pet’s living environment for fleas as well so that they do not simply come back straight away.

Alternatively, if your cat has severe problems with an infestation not just of fleas but other parasites such as ticks, hookworms, mites or others, then Revolution is a good choice as it will attack them all at the same time.  You will have to visit your vet to get this treatment, however, as it is prescription only.  There may well be other good cat flea treatments out there, and if you ask a pest controller or vet they will be able to recommend one for your cat or kitten.  For one last suggestion, however, there is Sergeant’s Gold.  This is generally reported to be a respectable product, but beware of initial positive results as there have been a lot of cases where it has worked for about a week and then had to be reapplied.

In terms of the cat flea treatments to keep clear of, again there are probably more, but the main ones are Zodiac, Adams, Sentry Natural Defence and Storebrand.  These products have been found to be at best ineffective and at worst dangerous, with reports even of hair being burned off from the application of Sentry Natural Defence.

It is best to get professional advice, either from a vet or pest controller, before choosing a flea treatment for your cat, and if you are using chemicals then always be watchful for any adverse reactions.
