As you probably already know, topical in this sense does not mean that it recently appeared in the newspaper or on the cover of Time Magazine; no, topical flea treatment is anything that is applied to the surface of the body.
There are a variety of different products available that are classed as topical flea treatment, and this article will go through the main ones. A word of warning first, however: although this class of treatment can be very effective, it is likely to irritate the skin of your pet and so any attempt to lick the applied product off (by your pet, although you shouldn’t try to lick it off either) should of course be resisted.
One of the best treatments for this does a lot at one time. The TriForce product (for Fleas, Ticks and Mosquitoes, hence the name) will not only get rid of fleas, it will repel mosquitoes and ticks as well. This topical flea treatment may be used on cats or dogs, however that is not the case for all of them so read the packaging of whichever you buy carefully. For example, a product which also affects fleas and ticks as well as fleas is K9 Advantix Flea and Tick, but this product should only be used on dogs. Advantage Flea Control, on the other hand, may be used on cats and dogs, and kills fleas at all stages of their life cycle. Other good off the shelf items are Original Frontline Top Spot, Promeris Tick and Flea Control, and Revolution for flea and heartworm control.
There are lots of options so it is a good idea to ask around to see which one might be best for your pet, and your vet would be a good place to start. Remember that some pets get allergic reactions so keep a special eye out the first time you use a product, and again, be careful that you pet does not ingest any of the topical flea treatment.
